“Through life we are taught to endure spaces of uncomfortability - fast paced working environments built to break people down or familial homes filled with tension. Growing up as an international nomad, my experience of home is less about place and rather about a sense of safety. I connect the spaces I've come to think of as home in South Africa with the realities of suburban living in Canada. In making this work, I delved into the meditative art-making processes of embroidery, woodcarving, and painting. Embroidery is a way for me to connect to my heritage of textile arts, using my grandmother's sewing scissors to cut my thread. In painting, I draw on impressionist and romantic painting styles, with gestural movements capturing my memories of space. Woodcarving became a way to solidify and ground the work, capturing the memories and love in urban spaces that sometimes are left unnoticed. The final body of work is tactile and immersive, inviting viewers to experience the sanctuary I felt throughout the making process. ”
