“‘Han’ is a Korean word that describes a sense of one’s loss, grief or 'shared suffering'. I trace connections in transferred individual and collective memories, particularly linked with intergenerational experiences, revealing fractures created by loss that perpetually affects understandings of our past, present and future. Various marks, gestures, and actions are archived in performative videos, preserved images and objects, which embody space and time.”
mihyun maria kim is a Korean-Canadian interdisciplinary emerging artist, presently working between Tkaronto/ Toronto (CA) and Leipzig (DE) with histories, memories, and intergenerational trauma (through experiences of war, divorce, displacement, poverty and classification). She has been a resident artist with AKIN X Collision Gallery (2020) and the Mississauga Living Arts Centre (2019-2020) in Canada, while pursuing further studies at OCAD University. During her three years in Europe (2017-2019), she participated and worked for international artist residencies in Paris, Barcelona, Seville, Leipzig, and co-founded MODS collective. She has shown her works internationally, with solo shows in Toronto, Leipzig and Seville.
