Sculptor and jeweler
“Working with clay, wax and metal, I create representational sculptures of the human form in degrees of strain, hyper-extension or interruption. My work reflects on the complexities of mental illness and the erosions wrought by capitalism, as these realities disconnect people from each other and ourselves.”
Douglas Free is a sculptor, jeweler, smith and propmaker working in Toronto, Canada. Drawing inspiration from his father's legacy as a silversmith, he has delved into jewelry design, infusing his pieces with nods to the Celtic iron age.Art as a conduit for healing and connection plays a large role in his practice, as he is also a sculpture instructor, personal support worker, and aspiring art therapist. In 2016 he co-founded Hands of Fire, a non-profit organization and sculpture group for the visually impaired. He has also shared his expertise by teaching sculpture to mental health groups at the Michael Garron Hospital, further bridging the gap between art and wellness.
