Meet the Designer

Richard

Coutts

jewelry

“I see jewelry as an expression of the wearer's personality, feelings, and ideals. These are very personal traits that are unique to the individual. Jewelry can only achieve this purpose by being designed and built specifically for the customer. Mass-produced jewelry cannot even begin to express the complex feelings of a person who is themselves, unique in the universe. I am seeking to establish a jewelry practice which caters to the needs of the individual who is seeking a bespoke work that can express their true feelings. This entails spending time with the customer to determine exactly what they want before starting the creation process. This, I believe, is the most important component of the design process.”

As a mature student, I am in the process of changing my career. I have always been an artisan who delved into the intersection of art and science. I was a neon sign glass bender until technology inevitably moved on. As a new jewelry maker/designer, I continue to combine science, technical skill, and a continuing quest for perfection in my work.My future plans include starting a small bespoke jewelry practice focusing on providing customers with works that are tailored to their specific needs.
