Gengtao

Lei

aka. Eurus,

“Through a feminist lens, Open with surrealism, this installation merges harsh realities with ideal visions, reimagining human reproduction and social norms. It challenges traditional gender roles and advocates for redefined reproductive rights and gender equality. Divided into two parts, the upper half features a metal spider's web made from welded copper strips and wires, enhanced with spray paint. Using a rhino model, various eggshells and embryos were 3D printed; these were colored and embedded in clay inside the eggshells to simulate placentas and umbilical cords, each uniquely shaped and secured with resin and glue. Wrapped in red silk thread, a net symbolizes the interconnected fates of women. The lower half contains sand where the eggshells and fetuses are buried, representing male fragility and role reversal. The entire piece is housed in a display box, showcasing the exchange of status between the genders.”

Eurus is a student with a passion for jewelry and gemstones and is currently studying Materials Design at the Ontario College of Art and Design, graduating in the spring of 2024.Much of Eurus' work attempts to show some reflection on social issues through her jewelry pieces and to express emotion through visuals. This work is a cross-industry challenge in the form of installation art, a challenge to herself and an exploration of ideas, and Eurus hopes to have the opportunity to show her attitude towards jewelry and to think more about social issues through some individual works in the future.
