“For my thesis project I have created and curated 4 Projects; “In The Void”, “Adrenaline”, “Idiosyncratic Spectacles”, and a Video project “Trampoline Is…”. These projects work together to give an insight into the perspective of a high-performance athlete. I created this work because it is a topic that pertains directly to me as I am a high-level athlete who has been in sports since 2008. My thesis work acts as a meeting point for my biggest passions art and sport. “In The Void" is a photography series that explores the concept of suspension and the mystery of the unknown. The images feature unidentifiable people suspended mid-air against a black background that creates "In The Void". The series aims to evoke a sense of suspense and intrigue, leaving the viewer wondering how the subjects were photographed and whether they are falling up or down or getting sucked into or emerging from the blackness. I created this series in collaboration with high-level trampoline athletes, to achieve the void of blackness around my subjects with them suspended in mid-air I brought strobe lighting to the trampoline gym and shot them in the dark, then used light curves to clean up any extra details hiding in the blacks. This project has an emphasis on the body and form and its scale invites the viewer to study the subjects depicted. "Idiosyncratic Spectacles" is a series of close-up portraits capturing the raw intimacy of eye contact, devoid of external reflections. Each image invites viewers into a direct encounter with the unique essence of individuality, celebrating the profound beauty and complexity of human connection through the power of the gaze. This project paired with my thesis work acts as a commentary on the relationship between the spectacle and the viewer and plays with the power dynamic as you can not view this work without it staring back at you. "Adrenaline" captures the exhilarating rush of sport, showcasing athletes in moments of pure joy and intensity. In this body of work, I freeze dynamic movements to celebrate the universal language of athleticism. Collaborating with athletes across various disciplines—from trampoline to ballroom dance, ballet, and taekwondo—I aim to evoke the visceral thrill and passion that drive individuals to excel in their chosen sports. Through vibrant imagery, this project invites viewers to experience the adrenaline-fueled essence of human movement and the unyielding commitment it demands. “Adrenaline” acts as a sister series to “In The Void”. It is meant to depict the love of sport and the reason why athletes do what they do. “Trampoline Is…” is a mesmerizing triptych video installation featuring slow-motion trampoline athletes overlaid with video portraits of staring eyes. This immersive experience blurs the lines between spectator and spectacle, inviting viewers to contemplate their role in the dynamic interplay of observation and performance. The video is made to be very mesmerizing as it includes ambient noise as well as audio from an interview that depicts the perspective of a high-level trampoline athlete. I shot the trampoline videos on location for this project with the use of studio lighting. I shot the video at a 120 fps frame rate and then further interpolated the footage to multiply the number of frames by 4x to achieve the hyper slow motion videos in my project. This project is included to tie my thesis work together in a way that gives the viewer insight into what my work is all about.”
