Sofia Velosa Borges is a graduating student from the Digital Painting and Expanded Animation program at OCAD University, with a minor in art history. She was born in Lisbon, Portugal, where she lived until her move to Toronto to attend university. Coming from a graphic design background, Sofia pursued digital animation, and began to also experiment with analog mediums, exploring the relationship between the digital and the material. Her work explores a variety of mediums, and tends to focus on traditional techniques. This includes working with frame by frame animation, video, photography and collage. Sofia’s practice tends to lean on more intimate subjects, exploring the intricate relationships developed in life, as well as personal and shared memories and experiences. The digital animation practice is more central to a play with shapes and colours, deeply influenced by her art history education and interest in post-war modern art. Her animated work emphasizes the formality of its medium.Sofia has developed animations participating in the International Animation Challenge held by the Jilin Animation Institute and has recently participated in an online residency Narratives Through Global Space, which will culminate in a screening at the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival. She has also created a series of independent animated projects and collaborative work.
