aka. Niko, Faculty of Art - Life Studies
“For my thesis, I created an installation of interwoven mixed media fibre and moss. I look for ways to represent symbiotic relationships seen in mycelium, fungi, and plant life. Through the actions of tying and sewing as well as weaving and growing, I use these fragments and filament-like structures to suggest a universe of connective tissues that multiply and mingle beneath the surface. This work focuses on the intimacy and care that goes into sustaining collaboration and community.”
Niko is a Toronto-based artist completing their 4th year at OCAD University. Working in horticulture, Niko interacts with plants and their various symbiotic partners on an almost daily basis, which is a great source of inspiration. Niko is currently most interested in mycology, which is the realm they have been exploring in their thesis. They will be continuing their studies and explorations this summer in a Residency/Independent Study with the Modern Mythologies Project. Apart from the sculptural work they have been engaging in recently, Niko is a junior tattoo artist and loves to illustrate. Niko looks forward to completing a Masters degree in the future.
