Noa

book, print, object

“I make books and objects to share my love of books, and to make people laugh. I hate the anxious feeling that exists inside the “white cube” and the hierarchy between artist and viewer: art doesn’t need to be serious or scary! Art can be about mundane things, like hiccups or advice not taken! My art is approachable and softly familiar, and uses humour to deal with the frustrations of the human experience. I share my stories to help expose the connections between us, no matter how differently we were raised. ”

Noa has just received her MFA from the Ontario College of Art and Design. She earned her BFA from the prestigious School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2016. Noa is proficient in a variety of mediums and methods - just ask, she’ll know something about it - but is primarily a bookmaker, screen printer, and film photographer. For Noa, art is meant to be touched: the viewer has the incredibly important role of interacting with the work. Noa wants the viewer to become part of the art: without you, the art is speaking without being heard. After all, if a piece of art falls in the forest and no one is around to be its viewer, does it still make a sound?Noa’s masters thesis demonstrates that the ‘book’ as we know it is more than a simple object: it is a symbol! We get to know each other by sharing these stories: narratives are how we understand the human experience. That makes one a book, making all of us books sitting on the same bookshelf, referring to each other by sitting cover-to-cover. Noa is scared of spiders, and may have a plant problem. She really likes oat milk and has a cat named Oatmeal.
