“In the Preface to Masanobu Fukuoka’s ‘The One-Straw Revolution’, Wendell Berry writes, “when we change the way we grow our food, we change our food, we change society, we change our values.” It’s a wisdom that I spent time uncovering through the rather inert pilgrimage of culturing wild yeast and baking bread, but also one that encompasses much more than just food—it’s to recognize the importance of the ability to make, to share, and to depend on one another at all that is indelible to our humanity. My practice this past year has been rooted in the Indigenous wisdom and ecological knowledge of the Potawatomi nation, one of the rightful and ancestral stewards of the land that I am currently residing on, and of the ecological practices of Robin Wall Kimmerer, Jenny Odell, Masanobu Fukuoka, and many others.
