“"Forgotten Victims" is an 8-piece collection that depicts Japanese WWII war crimes, including comfort women, Unit 731, and the Nanjing occupation. The Japanese army or victims of war are portrayed as yokai, reflecting their actions in bold, historically grounded compositions. Many view Japan through rose-tinted glasses due to its pop culture and traditions, often overlooking its war crimes during WWII. While European events dominate discussions, Japan's actions in Asia are frequently ignored. Using yokai to represent the Japanese army, I aim to spark dialogue about these atrocities, making the history more accessible to those interested in mythology and the general public. This approach encourages a deeper understanding of the past while holding imperialism accountable.”

Hi! I'm Haru Tai, an Illustrator based in Toronto. I've loved art from the moment I could hold a pencil, proudly saying I would become an artist when I grew up. I'm passionate about creating bold visuals with bright colours while tying a theme or story into my work. I love working with all subject matter, from cute to creepy. I primarily work digitally, although I am open to experimenting more with analogue. I love making characters, drawing tattoo flash, and red and black colours.
