“Displacement and isolation are themes that are reflected in my practice which aims to create installations as a means of escapism. My practice also explores ideas of the uncanny in relation to manufactured realities such as installation art and film sets. David Lynch’s films which deal with uncanny landscapes, as well as Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller’s installation works are among the most influential on my work.My practice utilizes a variety of elements including paintings, found objects, and some soft sculptural elements to create to scale installations that depict typically domestic spaces. The work is a juxtaposition of real and manufactured elements. The real elements such as the furniture give the viewer enough information and familiarity to ground themselves within the work while the painted walls and objects give just enough unfamiliarity to make the space feel dream like or uncanny. There is an emphasis on the ambiguity of the space in that there is no affirmed place, time of day, time of year, etc. It is a cohesive space that is devoid of people and defining details which encourages viewers to fill the space with themselves and their own narrative; thereby giving every viewer their own place and story within the work. ”
Sarah Zoccano is a Toronto based artist who has studied at OCADU in Toronto, Canada and DJCAD in Dundee, Scotland. An early discovery of a fascination with landscapes and environments as well as film has combined to push me towards the creation of what I call manufactured realities.
