“I’m interested in the investigation of migration - to wit, my family’s history with its sensations of deracination and tragedy. In the migration series, I have painted Asian migrants and migrant families: They’re leaving home and headed somewhere new and unknown. I’ve tried to capture their anxious anticipation, their worries about an unknown future. This is an experience I understand. ”
Shinae Kim is a Canadian painter of Korean descent. She creates work that moves between figuration and abstraction. Her awards are impressive. Shinae is the recipient of the Frances Lea Ziegler Memorial Scholarship (2021), the A. V. Isaacs Bursary (2021), the Andre Beaulieu Bursary for the Young Visual Artists (2022), and the TOAF Career Launcher Award (2023). On top of which, she's a hell of a tap dancer.
