“Step into my world; passive and explosive; Vivid and hidden. A single movement can trigger something unexpected - how do you react when you’ve just missed something important or witnessed something you shouldn’t have? Venture in, take your time”

Barru is a queer thamil-Canadian artist whose practice holds a self-reflective resonance with the characteristics and behaviours of chameleons. These mysterious creatures exist not as a symbol of concealment, but of apparent emotional honesty. Chameleons display their brightest colours not to hide, but to express themselves when they are most alive, alert, or emotionally charged. As an advocate for expressive vulnerability, Barru identifies with this instinctive gesture, seeing it as reflection of their own vivid and ever-shifting self.Through colour, Barru builds a visual language for feelings that resist articulation. As chameleons adjust the structures in their scales to reflect mood and energy, Barru manipulates texture, shape, contrast, and value to explore and express ineffable emotional worlds. Colour becomes a medium of truth; It reveals what is hidden beneath the surface. To sympathize with the chameleon’s colour changing behaviour is not to see it as an element of hiding, but one of pure, unfiltered expression. Barru invites others to bask in the beauty of their transformative colour configurations.
