“Artificial Intimacy explores the impact of technology on communication within my close relationships, examining contemporary dependencies on technology to forge bonds and maintain connections. These acrylic paintings, which represent digital interactions and experiences on canvases proportional to phone screens, recontextualize intimacy through the lens of contemporary hybrid communication.”

Erica Gibbs is a multidisciplinary artist and illustrator based in Toronto and Mississauga. This summer, she will graduate from OCAD University with a BFA in Drawing and Painting with a Minor in Illustration. Her hybrid practice traverses the digital and physical realms to produce paintings, illustrations, comics, sculptures, and installations. Erica’s recent thesis work explores how contemporary technology impacts intimacy and communication within everyday life. Erica will be showcasing her work at TOAF 2025 as part of the Centre for Emerging Artists and Designers Career Launcher.
