Alison Clark is an emerging multi-media artist from Toronto who reveals the influence image-making technology has over our lives and perceptions. Her most recent work, Echo Machines, involves the manipulation of material memory such as family photographs and home movies. This installation distorts and recontextualizes images from her family’s history, imagining new realities that indulge in the impulse to change what’s already happened. This impulse is of particular importance to Alison as a trans-woman who has previously worked in self-portraiture as a means of uncovering her queer identity and playing with the futures that may unfold from this discovery. While her work is deeply personal, she strives to maintain a universality that allows anyone to participate in the work and recognize how their own lives are affected by image machines and material memory.
