“Amara draws inspiration from her Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Indigenous ancestry, with roots in Jamaica and St. Vincent, along with a newfound connection to Trinidad. Her artistic mission is to amplify the voices, realities, and richness of Caribbean islands and their histories. Amara achieves this by reworking archived family photographs and incorporating her own manipulated images, presenting a contemporary perspective on representing Caribbean landscapes.”
Amara King (b. 1997, Tkaronto, Ontario, Canada) is a lens-based artist completing her BFA in Photography with a minor in Printmaking at OCAD University. At the intersection of experimentation and conceptual practices, Amara engages with a range of mediums to investigate the nuances of being (a)part of the Caribbean diaspora, navigating through themes of belonging, identity, history, culture, and storytelling. Her work aims to implement space for the viewer to engage all five senses, to feel, remember, and immerse oneself within the landscapes we call home — spaces both familiar and ephemeral.
