Sarah-Lynn

Hasrouny

aka. Deconstructed Dog, Visual Art

“As a person who believes in decolonization, has been touched heavily by erasure, and who grew up in the institution of Catholicism, I invite viewers to confront their fear of death and the methods used by the institution to deflect this confrontation while also considering the eurocentric basis of the 'good' and the 'holy'. I was taught that God’s creatures will always go to Heaven, unlike men, because they are separate from his conception of afterlife and original sin. If we strip away our rationales of death, such as faith, we are equal to these creatures. A Crucifix is Made of Wood is a series of three paintings set in an (un)identifiable space with animal and man situationally equal, which invites morality and superiority to be critiqued. Utilizing oil-based realism and liminal atmospheres, these paintings converse with Catholic artworks depicting Christ and His followers, while keeping the subject in a neutral environment of neither Heaven nor Hell, as questions of faith, judgement, morals, and superiority are asked.”
