“Intrusive thoughts are the misaligned, abrupt and taboo mental absurdities that we all experience. These intrusions vary in frequency and intensity between each person that can lead to distress, debilitation and disorder of the mind. The uncontrollable and unwanted prompts pertaining to harming oneself and others, contamination and disease, self worth, doubt of one’s thoughts and actions, and the acting upon disturbing sexual endeavors captures the hundreds of daily mental intrusions that assault my psyche. My work is the tangible construction and demonstration of my pervasive thoughts after developing obsessive-compulsive disorder. Utilizing relatable objects, themes and signage in correlation with repetitive visual stimuli the work intends to emulate this distressing and overwhelming mental disposition. Within these physical portrayals of my personal intrusive thoughts, I hope that the viewer may reflect on their own intrusions wherever and however they arise as well as question how these intrusions may define themself.”

Derek Berry is a multidisciplinary artist based in Orangeville who works in a wide variety of printmaking mediums, acrylic paint and sculpture. Currently Derek is continuing his education at OCADU majoring in printmaking and publications after completing a 3-year program at Georgian College with honours. Derek co-founded the PRNT Collective in Barrie alongside local artists and colleagues whose goal is to educate and exhibit printmaking to the local community. Derek has exhibited seldom since the pandemic focusing primarily on his mental health, but has recently returned to his artistic roots, reflecting upon his experiences during isolation and reintroduction into current societal norms. Presently, Derek is looking to cultivate his creative process and procure a cohesive body of work that encompasses his journey with obsessive compulsive disorder.
