Oil Painting

“' i wanna feel you from the inside' is a body of work examining the self objectification and sexualization of the female body through the representation of horror and cake. Drawing from personal experiences, I integrated various stills from horror movies, pornography and found digital images to create a series of oil paintings that symbolize the commodification and objectification of the female body. Using cake, this acts as a visual metaphor for the allegorical and literal consumption of the body. Within the cropping of these scenes, it mimics how affection and gore are typically shot within horror films, illustrating the feeling of over indulgence in sexual intimacy and the desire for love, resulting in being disposable in the aftermath. In contemporary discourse, women's bodies are discussed through comparison to food, particularly when describing body parts, perpetuating longstanding connotations that reinforce objectification and systemic sexism. The cropping of these images is deliberate, in order to abstract the concept of perpetrator and victim, blurring the lines of responsibility and bringing into question unhealthy ideologies of sex within the contemporary. Similar to gore within horror, I evoke visceral and uncomfortable sensations through visual imagery. The cake serving an allegory of the body is placed upon the back and genitalia, evoking sensations of discomfort through foreign substances placed upon the skin. Furthermore this gesture complicates the act of consumption as non-inherent sexual body parts are rendered erotic through context and presentation. Engaging with the body in these various ways, my work destabilizes boundaries between nourishment and desire, setting the viewer into a dynamic that is intimate yet unsettling. I strive to depict those uncomfortable sensations and how the impact of self objectification can consequently affect an individual.

Kieran Keenan(b.2004, Niagara Falls, ON) is a Toronto based visual artist currently attending OCAD University completing her BFA in Drawing and Painting. She is an oil based painter who strives to use figure based imagery to express experiences such as sexualization in young women. Her practice uses the body as a way to reclaim its sexualization with the intention to normalize it, where it's just a body conveying a message that doesn't have to be inherently sexual. Painting for Keenan allows her to express personal issues tying in personal interests with horror thematic lens to convey introspective and internal struggles which become synthesized into an outward expression
