Drawing and Painting

“Adamjee’s piece Ilm-O-Amal explores the tension between lived experiences of Islam and its portrayal in Western media. Informed by her upbringing in Pakistan and her migration to Canada, the work reflects a growing awareness of the gap between personal understanding and external perception. A reimagined Islamic geometric pattern highlights the faith’s foundations of discipline, peace, and contemplation, while embedded skin-tone squares reference racialized stereotypes drawn from a “terrorist colour chart.” The calligraphy “Ilm-O-Amal” (knowledge and practice), inspired by Sadequain’s mural at Frere Hall in Karachi is layered with tabloid imagery, creating a contrast between the depth of Islam in contrast to Western media narratives. Through this interplay of fragmentation and layering, Adamjee encourages viewers to question their assumptions, revealing the distance between representation and lived reality.”
