Experimental Animation (EXAN)

“Voices is a single channel 2D animated short film that illustrates my experience of being misgendered as a non-binary queer individual, the emotions that live under the surface. The film tells the story of a young non-binary protagonist swimming in the ocean as they struggle to grapple with their internal state. ”

Ash Woolf is a Toronto-based mixed media artist working in 2D animation, character design, illustration and projection mapping. Their artistic practice explores themes of identity, queer experiences, and mental health. They look for creative ways to talk about heavier topics, using art to break up the tension and bring the message across. Ash studied experimental animation at OCAD University working with mixed media, found objects, and projection alongside their animation practice. They specialize in 2D character animation, utilizing character design and acting to bring their stories to life, exploring the way in which projection can be used to push the limits of animation. Ash presented their work at Royal Ontario Museum’s (ROM) After Dark event as part of the field placement with Maxime Touroute.
