“My art explores undermining traditional photographic styles by placing traditional or "cliche" photographs amongst bright colours, and odd compositions. All of this is done to make the traditional photograph ugly, and to undermine the original goal of cliche photographs, which has traditionally been to have a nice aesthetic quality. This idea comes from a place of admiration for these cliche photo's. I find that they're hard to dislike as they aren't trying to be more than aesthetically pleasing visual documents. But, they're still not very interesting, artistically speaking. My idea to make them interesting was to undermine they're one redeeming factor, by adding them to a composition that is comparatively ugly. I thought that by undermining the cliched image, I would actually be drawing attention to it's likability. By making everything around it comparatively ugly, it exemplifies the simple beauty of a cliched image. ”

Hi I'm Malcolm and I'm a 23 year old photo based artist from Thamesford Ontario! I moved to Toronto in 2021 to attend OCAD, and spend time getting to know the city. While in Toronto I've spent most of my time working on my practice and learning as much as I can about the current art scene, and the history of art in general. OCAD has been a great resource for both advancing my art career through great lessons in art, and through the exposure it has given my practice. I'm very grateful and proud to have gone to OCAD for my undergrad. I've learnt a lot from attending OCAD, both in my practice, and personally.
