“William Morris states that humans favour what they keep in their lives to be either useful or beautiful. Because of this, I argue that the pervasiveness of fairytales in our culture illustrates that they are both beautiful and useful. In my work I look to adapt and consider the revolutionary contexts of fairytales in reflexion of my community today. ”

Carter Carscadden (He/Him) is a genderqueer printmaker from rural eastern Ontario, currently completing their education at OCAD University in Toronto. A storyteller at heart, Carter pulls from the western canon of fairytales to examine his relationship to queerness, grief, and his community, and does so with pieces made using relief, letterpress, intaglio, and screen-printing. Working with the knowledge that folklore wishes to explain a metaphoric "Why?", Carter is drawn to using the language established by these tales to approach contemporary issues. With his art, Carter aims to question preexisting structures in order to build a stronger and more compassionate community.
