“On the Hook is a body of work composed of four oil paintings. These works use the symbology of fish as a metaphor for the feminine experience with gender and sexual violence. Our containment, commodification, inhumane treatment and mass hunting is a perpetuated social expectation that continues to be standardised with the presence of male domination. The presence of masculine figures in On the Hook illustrates the intrusion of space, utilizing anonymity to draw parallels to the patriarchal protection of man. Drawing from personal lived experience creates an intimate process of reflection through the work, while the use of visual metaphor allows for a level of detachment from the idea of the individual that creates a wide reaching connectivity. More than the symbolics of fish as a relation, the physical treatment as disposable commodities, and trophies to be caught, is intended to provoke and encourage viewers to engage with discourse surrounding the erasure of equality and the ongoing effort to contain and constrict feminine bodies. ”

Lindsay Frankel (B. 2004, Santa Monica, CA), is a contemporary Toronto-based painter from Vancouver B.C.. She uses oil paints to investigate themes of memory, identity, and sexuality. She is currently completing her BFA major in Drawing and Painting and her minor in English at OCAD University. Lindsay’s recent work reflects an interest in cropping images, and re-contextualizing the figure. This process is paired with aquatic motifs, in particular fish, as an exploration of her female experience.
