“I am fragmented. I am Chinese Canadian.Through the parallel stories of two Chinatowns, my BFA thesis project, Disconnected Connections, is an exploration of immigration, displacement, and the ties of my family history with my mixed heritage. The small mining town of Barkerville, British Columbia is home to the second oldest Chinatown in Canada. In the 1840’s the people there immigrated from the Guangdong Province. In the 20th century, my grandparents immigrated from Guangzhou, Guangdong Province to Toronto.”

Alex Hall is a lens-based Chinese Canadian artist working in Toronto, Canada. She specializes in photography and alternative processes. She holds a BFA in photography from the Ontario Collage of Art and Design University (OCADU) and was a former dancer with the National Ballet of Canada.Working with themes of the unknown and the past, Alex is drawn to material driven explorations. She thinks about how the presentation of her work is heightened by the experimental materiality. Wanting the viewer to leave her work with more questions and curiosity about the world around us.
