“Interlude is a 2D animation about the journey one takes from denial and fear to moving forward and being free from mental anguish. Inspired by my own faults and inaction to explore my limits in avoidance of failure; the character in the narrative is stuck within a world where time stops wherever they go as a consequence of choosing not to go through a mysterious door. They exist solely as a shadow while life goes on without them, essentially trapping themselves in a world of the in-between, an interlude, of sorts.”
Maria Tran (b. 1999) is a Vietnamese-Canadian artist based in Toronto, Ontario. She is a graduate of OCAD University with a BFA in Drawing and Painting: Digital Painting and Expanded Animation. She works with a variety of programs including Photoshop, After Effects, Maya, and Cinema 4D to create sentimental animated works and digital paintings. Drawing inspiration from a variety of themes, her practice focuses on the intersection of personal and collective experiences in hopes to connect with a broader community. Her latest work navigates the detrimental effects on the psyche due to the fear of failure derived from an immense strive for success. Using art as a form of healing and introspective investigation, her works act as documentation of her progression through life dealing with internal and familial conflict as a first generation Vietnamese-Canadian.
