“Legends of Reality” reimagines young adults’ financial and familial struggles into vibrant, sci-fi fantasy narratives. Through bold sci-fi themes blending activism and concept art, my work will confront harsh realities, inspire change and empower young voices with striking, imaginative storytelling.”

Katherine Maybaum is a contemporary artist born and raised in Alberta and currently based in Toronto. Working across painting and digital illustration, her practice explores storytelling through pop-surreal imagery that blends realism, retro aesthetics, fantasy, and subtle humour. Her work often centers on themes of identity, resilience, and empowerment, using stylized figures and imaginative environments to reframe personal and shared experiences. Her process is concept-driven, with medium chosen to best support the narrative—most often working in oil paint and watercolour. In her recent thesis project, she has shifted into digital media to expand her ability to create luminous, sci-fi-inspired environments and explore more complex visual storytelling.Drawing from both lived experience and speculative world-building, Katherine creates narrative-driven pieces that balance emotional depth with bold, imaginative visuals. She will be attending Vancouver Film School in June, where she plans to further develop her skills in digital art and visual storytelling.
