Drawing and Painting
“My multidisciplinary approach is rooted in the practice of decreation. I burn documents and materials that are representative of homophobic ideologies and use the resulting ashes as pigment for oil paintings. The final compositions often contain religious undertones which convey the narrative of liberation. These works are accompanied by bronze sculptural components and a projection-based installation which documents the process of desecration.”
Chris Canales-Cisneros is a Toronto-based painter of Salvadorian descent. While his practice is primarily based in drawing and painting, their work constantly expands into sculpture and installation. His work is concerned with exploring issues of identity, which entails their heritage, sexuality, gender, and most importantly, the intersectionality of these fields. Currently completing his bachelor's in fine arts at OCADU, majoring in the drawing and painting program and minoring in sculpture and installation, his recent artistic focus is a line of work that combines these two fields of study through accompanying sculptures that involve their paintings into a larger artistic process that ultimately results in an installation-based approach.
