“Out of Sight Out of Mind explores common symptoms associated with invisible disabilities. These types of disabilities present themselves with little outward signs of manifestation and fluctuate in severity. The erratic changes of the invisibly disabled body seem suspect and confusing to the abled bodied eye. My work invites these individuals to take a closer look at the inner workings of the invisibly disabled body, by examining common unseen symptoms of invisible disabilities. Symptoms include chronic pain and fatigue, muscle weakness, cognitive difficulty, memory loss, and peculiar physical sensations. These symptoms are translated into my work using imagery from inside the human body, textile techniques in metal, and alternative materials. The internal body, including the skeleton and neurons, are present but not physically visible, similar to invisible disabilities. Textile techniques are used to convey the open and exposed quality of the work, and for their ability to be performed in different settings. The alternate materials were chosen because of their common and mundane traits and muted palette. When these concepts, materials and techniques are combined, they are transformed into something completely extraordinary.”

Zahra is an emerging Jewellery Artist and Designer based in the GTA. She is completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts at OCAD University. Zahra draws inspiration for her work through organic patterns, forms, and lines found in nature. Her work ranges in abstraction, showcasing evident motifs or implying naturalistic forms. During her time at OCAD Zahra was diagnosed with a permanent chronic illness. This diagnosis led to a shift in her working style. Zahra now focuses on incorporating textile techniques in metal and explores the incorporation of alternate materials in her work. Her thesis work at OCAD University, "Out of Sight Out of Mind" showcases this change in technique. Zahra plans to continue these exploration in her future work.
