“I explore the rejection of the Cartesian notion of “fixed identities" — the idea that the self is pure, unchanging, and unitary. Instead, I present identity as complex, layered and ever-evolving, through the use of overlapping portraiture. My work invites viewers to question the assumption that there is a “correct” or “incorrect” way of existing based on social norms. To instead consider the layers of histories and experiences that shape identity. To ultimately allow people to be seen and understood as whole individuals shaped by their many evolving dimensions—and in doing so, allowing the unfamiliar “other” to being viewed and understood as “another” expression of human truth.”

Jasmeen is a Brampton-based artist who explores the notion of identity as being complex, layered and ever-evolving, rejecting the Cartesian concept of identity as being fixed, “pure”, and unitary, through double exposure portraits. While primarily working in charcoal, she also explores mediums including graphite and oil paint. Jasmeen's work has been shown in galleries throughout Canada and the United States, including the John B. Aird Gallery, Gallery 1313, and Scene Metrospace.
