Mixed Media Animation
“ Or, The Whale is a three-minute animated short film that explores themes of parental pressures and self betrayal through a combination of 2D digital animation and paper cutout background pieces.”

Sam Imbrogno is a Toronto-based multimedia animator, illustrator, and set fabricator, creating work that combines analogue environments with 2D digital character animation. Interested in interrogating ‘humanness’ and exploring the psychological relationship with the self, Sam produces single-channel short films that narratively and materially engage with these themes. This is accomplished through a mixed-media approach, one specifically involving built sets or paper cutout work being applied as the backdrop for digital characters, working to disorient said characters from their own surroundings. Sam began studying visual arts at a young age, attending Woodbridge Art School from the years 2012-2016, and is now graduating from OCAD University with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Experimental Animation. Sam has had films and animations screened at a number of OCADU’s events including Animated Bodies Exhibition (2024), Experimental Animation Festival at Carlton Cinema (2025), and most recently the EXAN Midway Fair (2026). Sam has also collaborated with Embreate as an intern, creating the film 'Wrapped Up' in support of the company’s book What has Sci-Fi Taught Us. The latest project Sam has created is an animated short film titled Or, The Whale.
