Reimagining Wellness: An Architectural Exploration of Integrative Health Centers

Environmental Design
2023
This project is on the redesign of the empty building located on the intersection of Bathurst and Dundas Street west. The site of the building is located beside Toronto Western hospital and is situated beside the emergency centre. Bathurst and Dundas Street West is a busy intersection located in downtown Toronto, Canada. The area is known for its diverse community, with a mix of residential and commercial properties. The intersection is surrounded by several amenities, including schools, parks, and community center. It is also home to a wide range of restaurants, cafes, and shops that cater to different taste and preferences. The purpose of this wellness centre is to promote and support the overall health and well-being of individuals. This wellness center is designed to provide a range of programs and services that focus on improving physical, mental, and emotional health. This wellness center will provide access to resources, programs, and services that support healthy habits and behaviours. This is a place where individuals can learn about healthy lifestyle choices and connect with other who share similar health and wellness goals. I designed this this wellness centre to complement the existing healthcare services in Toronto by providing a holistic approach to health and wellness for the community. This building is conveniently located near the hospital, offering a range of services and programs aimed at promoting physical, mental, and emotional well being for individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Some programs that can be offered in this center are fitness classes, nutrition counselling, mental health counselling, mindfulness and meditation classes.

“The design of a wellness center should go beyond simply providing space for physical exercise. A truly holistic wellness center must address the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of wellness as well. My design aims to create a welcoming and inclusive space that promotes wellness in all aspects of life. The building is designed to be sustainable and environmentally responsible, using materials that minimize the center's impact on the environment. Natural light was prioritized to create a comfortable and inviting environment that connects visitors with nature. Inside the building, spaces are designed with the needs of different groups in mind. Private rooms are available for individual therapy sessions, while group spaces are designed to facilitate community building and group activities. And spaces for relaxation and meditation promote mental and emotional wellness.Overall, this design creates a space that supports visitors’ physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
