Acrylic paint, collage, felt, and embroidery on canvas
9 in x 12 in
One of a series of introspective self portraits I created over the course of the pandemic, combining mediums I am independently interested in: photography, painting, collage, and embroidery.
“During the stay-at-home order, I - like many other people - found myself accumulating an alarming amount of houseplants, including one of my favourites, the Croton Petra, a plant known for its colourful green, yellow, orange, and red foliage. With limited access to models, I had to resort to photographing myself. I have never been comfortable on the opposite end of a camera, unable to see what I look like and unsure what to do with my hands, my body, my face. Working on these pieces has forced me to confront my own insecurities, by growing a garden of thread, paint, and paper to obscure - or accentuate - my features as I see fit.”
