“This piece addresses the following symptoms, cognitive difficulty and memory loss. The imagery for this piece is inspired by microscopic images of human cells and neurons. Two alternate materials used are acorn tops and hollow animal bones that have been sliced horizontally. These materials have been chosen because the acorn tops have a small pattern on their underside which looks similar to the shape of a neuron and the shape of the bones act as if it is providing a look inside the wearers mind. A technique of crochet called free form crochet is used to crochet into the alternate materials. The use of this crochet technique, which appears disorganized and inconstant references how difficult cognitive functions can become. Large gaps are seen throughout this piece symbolizing gaps in memory that occur with a symptom such as memory loss. This piece was assembled by stitching together various panels of free form crochet, forming a rounded silhouette to fit the head.”
