Lights Out

2022
Lights Out is a short survival horror game. The player is equipped with nothing more than a flashlight, which will act as the main character’s weapon and defense. Shining light on enemies will ward them off, but the player has a limited amount of battery and must find batteries throughout the game to keep the flashlight on, or be exposed to repulsive monsters that are roaming the mansion in the dark.
“First and foremost, I’m an artist. I’ve had much experience creating 2D illustrations, and throughout my program, I’ve taken an interest in 3D modelling and animation. You could say that this project was my first proper exploration into 3D rigging and animation. Other than Lights Out, I’ve created one other 3D game that was a platformer titled Moonbound. However, that game consisted entirely of low-poly graphics and was made in 3 weeks. This project was quite an ambitious one because it was my first time learning a lot of things - for instance, it was my first time modelling, rigging, and animating humanoid models. I learned about many aspects of 3D game programming that differed entirely from the platformer I had made a few months prior. I studied many games that inspire me very closely in order to replicate a similar feeling in my own work. For many years I was convinced that I would want to create 3D platformers above all else, but after playing the Resident Evil series, I became highly inspired to create a horror game. So, you could say that the Resident Evil remakes are the reason that this project exists in the first place. After experiencing this series, I took an interest in other survival horror games, and have found a genre that really resonates with me as an artist. This game is an example of how I want to express myself through my work going forward.”
