The Art of Celebration Installation

Curation
The Art of Celebration: Black Culture and Creativity explores the work of four talented black-identifying artists. Through their vastly different works, each artist explores what it means to be black and celebrate their joy, love and culture. As celebration serves as a major theme in my work, I sought to explore how other artists interpret this theme. With the assistance of curator Ashley Waith, we organized an exhibition at SugarKane restaurant, a cherished establishment known for its black-owned Caribbean cuisine in Toronto. The event featured live music, food, and a curated selection of artwork from 'The Art of Celebration' exhibition, originally showcased at the Ada Slaight Gallery. Our aim was to bring art out of the confines of the traditional gallery setting and reintroduce it to the community.Curated by Ashley Waith and Pixel HellerArtists: Abike The Artist, Ehiko Odeh, Pixel Heller and Queen Kukoyi

“ At a time so prevalently divided, to lead with love is a radical act. This exhibition focuses on these radical acts of celebration in life and how the focus on this love builds a stronger, more powerful community. What does it mean to be saved by this love and this joy? To be saved is to be saved by our community and to heal together from the world around us.”

“I use art as a way of reconnecting with my Caribbean identity, this has led me to explore themes of carnival masquerade, cultural fluidity, Black identity and the preservation of cultures.”
