Community of Masqueraders in Motion

Video
2024
When you live outside your community and finally find it, you appreciate and cherish it more than ever. Community is where I found my sense of belonging and purpose. I play with that analogy through a video of myself acting as members of a community dancing in spirit. The video is overlapped pushing the narrative of ghosts. This work shows the resilience and vitality of community bonds, transcending physical boundaries to evoke a sense of unity and continuity across time and space. I aim to capture the essence of belonging and the enduring spirit of community, celebrating its power to uplift and unite us across the Diaspora.

“This video was the beginning of my experimentation with other mediums besides painting. It was the moment I took the masks off the 2D nature of paintings and wore them in performance. The maks were made with nothing more than string and cardboard which became the building blocks for looking at the deeper meanings within my practice and finding ways I can push my work to be more conceptual.”

“I use art as a way of reconnecting with my Caribbean identity, this has led me to explore themes of carnival masquerade, cultural fluidity, Black identity and the preservation of cultures.”
