Urn Containing Ashes
Sculpture
A hand-turned urn containing remanents of work burned for artistic processes.
“For my thesis, I worked with ash as a pigment for oil paint, the experimental process leads to an excess amount of ash and byproduct not used in the paint-making process, yet it still holds symbolic value. I created a vessel to contain and display this matter and thought that an urn would be the best form to convey its contents. In order to create the live edge visible on both the lid and body of the vessel I turned a solid log on the lathe. The vessel contains a cavity at its core which contains the ashes. The bottom is finished using the Shou Sugi Ban technique as it correlates both visually and conceptually to themes of burning found throughout my thesis work. ”
