“The word “Aunt” was used as a derogatory term primarily in the south and was aimed at slaves within white households. The work I am currently creating, titled "Cracker," will be a public commentary/ protest piece that focuses on branding and how consumers choose products. Sure, Quaker Oats makes some good-tasting oatmeal, among other products. However, the foundation of the company and what it has built, including brands like Aunt Jemima, are blatantly racist. They are only changing this now. Profiting off blackface is more prevalent than we think on our supermarket shelves. It’s about choosing what we support and recognizing how these brands shape consumerist habits. It can be as simple as not buying a package of instant racism.”
