“At a young age, people told me, “To know where you’re going, you have to know where you came from.” My work embodies what it means to be mixed race by using my past to understand the present. By not shying away from one's history and accepting the colour of my skin, I'm able to understand my identity as a mixed-race person.”
Forbes Sang works with the idea of being mixed-race and how this changes the way he is perceived through family and societal norms. As an adult living in Canada, Forbes searches for his own identity. Through portraits, painting, collage, and objects, Forbes can pick apart his idea of who he is, entirely giving him the ability to define himself as a mixed-race person. As a passing white male, Forbes uses his privilege to educate others through his work. Feeling like an outcast in certain situations, Forbes connects with a side of himself that cannot be seen simply through the colour of his skin. He hopes that others like him can find their own identity through his work.
