04 Book Layout Redesign
Graphic Design
2021
The objective for this project was to redesign a book that has typographic and grid issues, and create something that is well-crafted, easily readable and legible for the readers. Typography should help a reader's eye flow through the words and enjoy the story being told without having to struggle while reading each line. My goal for this project was to organize the text into easily read paragraphs that reflect a consistent grid structure from cover to cover. Mermaid Tales from Around the World was written by Mary Pope Osborne and illustrated by Troy Howell. I have included all original illustrations into my redesign. This book was one of my favourites when I was younger but I never realized how difficult it was to read, with its large walls of text and no break for the reader's eyes. I laid out the text to be more whimsical and interesting to look at, while being much easier to read by having a lower character count per line and a 2 column layout.
“The typography of a book should be well-crafted and easy to read. It should tell a story itself and be its own character, providing a journey for the reader from cover to cover. ”
