The Omphalos is the stone that Rhea fed to Cronus in lieu of Zeus. More generally, it is a term to describe a rounded stone that represents the navel of the earth, which were deeply sacred objects in ancient Greece. The plural, ‘Omphali' are sacred centres which civilizations create or adopt. Standing alone, the omphali are perched one on top of the other, taking on an almost human form.
