Home /hōm/“It’s the intangible feeling you get in a location, a sense of peace, joy from loved ones or an environment where everyone knows they’re welcome. ‘Home’ isn’t easy to define, but you know when you’re there.”

“This thesis project centers on the creation of a hospice in Burlington, placed in the quiet rural section of Milburough Line. Drawing from my own experience seeing my father's hospice care journey, this project aims to rethink end-of-life care, prioritizing the core concept of "home" as a source of comfort and solace.The hospice's location offers both accessibility and serenity, situated just minutes from major highways yet surrounded in an abundance of nature. Around its nature, the building's shaped around the existing trees on the property, furthering its connection with the environment.The existing century house on-site serves as a welcoming entrance, evoking a sense of familiarity and warmth.The hospice's floor plan is designed with productivity and care in mind, ensuring simple navigation by integrating communal and private spaces. From communal kitchens and dining areas to quiet rooms and patient bedrooms, every feature is carefully thought out to foster a sense of community and peace. Key design elements include abundant natural light and a harmonious integration with the surrounding landscape, creating a soothing atmosphere for patients and their families. Through thoughtful zoning and attention to detail, the hospice becomes a sanctuary where comfort, compassion, and dignity are at the forefront.At the thesis’s core, this project is centered in the belief that everyone deserves a dignified end-of-life experience. By prioritizing the concept of "home," the hospice becomes more than simply a centre; it is a calming environment where people can find care and support during the last stages of life.”
