INTERDWELLING

Environmental Design
2024
The ravine at Rosedale neighborhood in Toronto stands as a testament to the delicate balance between human settlement and the natural world. Through rigorous site interviews, it has become evident that human activities, including settlement and highway construction, pose significant threats to the safety and wild movement of native animals, resulting in noise pollution and habitat fragmentation. In response to these findings, the project "Interdwelling" emerges as a beacon of hope, seeking to redefine the relationship between humans and wildlife in this urban landscape. The central question driving this endeavor is: How can we co-habit with wildlife in a natural setting while restoring exclusive habitats for animals in the ravine?

“Our proposed approach is rooted in extensive research on safety distances and biodiversity. We envision transforming the existing trail into an environmentally-friendly pathway, strategically lifting and pushing it to minimize disturbance to wildlife habitats. Moreover, we propose the addition of educational programs along the trail, designed to raise awareness among city inhabitants about the importance of coexistence with wildlife. The design features of "Interdwelling" are multifaceted. Not only will the trail be reimagined to accommodate both human and animal needs, but also observation towers will be constructed to provide opportunities for wildlife viewing. A meticulously planned garden, resilient to noise, will serve as a sanctuary for biodiversity, enriching the walking experience for visitors. The anticipated results of "Interdwelling" are profound. By creating a harmonious space where humans and animals coexist, we aim to benefit not only native mammals, birds, and butterflies but also the broader community. Through this project, we aspire to demonstrate that it is possible to live in harmony with nature even within the confines of an urban environment. In conclusion, "Interdwelling" represents a bold step towards reimagining the relationship between humans and wildlife in the ravine at Rosedale. As we embark on this journey, let us remember the imperative of preserving our natural heritage and fostering coexistence for the betterment of all beings and future generations.”
