The Pandemic Moments I
Drawing
2020
Graphite on paper
25.0 x 22.0 inches
In this project, I chose to work on an image that I found from a South Korean news site to create an emotional piece. My work depicts contradictory emotions and feelings. For instance, the face shield, mask, and gloves show closeness, barriers, and distance between them. However, the hairstylist standing right behind the client and touching his hair evokes emotional intimacy such as connection and closeness. I intend to communicate the moments of crisis through the balance of high contrast to low contrast and space in the background to create a story that captures the various emotions around the piece. I believe eyes carry a lot of emotion, so I decided to use graphite pencils as they allow me to put thin to thick layers onto the surface and give a variety of tones and values to make a realistic portrait drawing. I then used a blending stump so as to not to leave a single pencil mark to achieve a realistic effect.
