Jugaad Principle 01: Type Roti

Jugaad Principle 1: using materials/systems against their original intent in service to your needs.Wanting to create an experimental typeface that embodied the concept of using alternative materials and methods, I cooked letterforms into roti as a form of jugaad. Roti is a common flatbread found in many South Asian meals. Using laser-cut letters of my typeface Rivers, I stamped the letters into roti as it was being cooked, to leave a burned mark on the other side that was touching the hot pan. Seeing that roti is something to be eaten rather than used as a design tool, the results were varying and interesting. The purpose of going through this experiment was to show how the thought process of jugaad can be applied to my design process. Jugaad entails using alternative materials to achieve what you want. I used that part of the jugaad process to create type roti.
