Laika, Strelka, and Belka were the test canines during the Soviet space race. In 1957, Laika boarded Sputnik 2 and is considered to be the first animal to orbit the Earth - but unfortunately succumbed to overheating, and never returned home. 3 years later, Strelka and Belka boarded Sputnik 5, which resulted in a successful expedition and green lit Yuri Gagarin’s exploration to space.
