King and Dufferin Community Center

Environmental Design
2021
The King and Dufferin area is filled with diversity and the essence of community. The King and Dufferin community events centre is located at the intersection immersed in scenic greenery and plaza socializing space with its distinct circular floor plans and “z” roof structure. The centre takes into consideration its main design principle of creating a flow between the indoors and outdoors with its glass curtain wall facade and usable green roof. The park engulfs the community centre with greenery spaces for relaxation and meditation. The community centre focuses on the connectivity of the community with areas for kids and adults alike. The main feature of this project is the endless greenery that surrounds and coats the community centre. With the community centre’s green roof in the shape of a “Z”, the roof allows for the movement of people to travel through the square from its entry plaza to its park area uninterrupted with the use of its accessible ramps and green space. The green roof also allows for additional outdoor usable space, perfect for relaxation, activity, and dynamic movement. The roof also has a large skylight allowing sunlight to seep into the main entry area of the building, focused on the relaxation space. The roof is also accessible from the ground floor with an elevator. Park area engulfs the south of the centre, with playground, picnic areas and a zen garden (inspired by the sites surrounding cultural background), while on the north of the centre an events plaza suitable for food trucks and festivals, invites people into the space and community center. GROUND FLOOR: The ground floor of the community centre is fit with the same theme of greenery as its outdoor surroundings, with a relaxation space composed of grass area and water fountain puddles, suitable for all ages. The relaxations space is surrounded by a mini library, exhibition space for cultural displays or art exhibits, as well as classrooms, computer labs, and a private lounge meeting room.To the north of the main entry area, classroom space, washrooms, storage, and a multipurpose amphitheatre is located, suitable for yoga classes, seminars, shows and more. To the south of the main entry area, an events space, and outdoor/indoor cafe equipped with a kitchen and sliding glass doors to open or close the space to the outdoor terrace. MATERIAL FINISHES: Facade includes polished white/gray marble tile cladding and glass window panes with white contemporary mullions. Roof structure completed with polished poured concrete, inset grass, and accent supports of steel circular columns polished in chrome. Shade structure on roof composed of poured concrete, polished and supported by the polished stainless steel elevator structure. Exterior of community centre completed with trees and complementary greenery.
