An experimental animated film reimagining the sky as a tactile, sensory object, brought to life through soft pastels and a reverberating ambient soundscape.

“"I Paint the Sky With My Fingers" is a portrait of the sky. The question I was seeking to answer through my work was how to depict the sky as the protagonist, entirely isolated from the existence of the earth. What could a sky like that look like, or feel like on your fingers? What might it sound like? How could the constant yet ephemeral nature of the sky be captured in a short film?I attempt to answer these questions in this film through visual abstraction, traditional media, and an ambient soundscape that incorporates found sounds to a spacey, wide-sound synth piece. I developed, through many iterations and material tests, a visual language of soft pastels and a balance of soft and hard-edged marks, and with layered markings to create depth. Every frame is an impermanent image. In the bounds of a photographed frame, not only are these gestures preserved, so too are traces of tangibility. This film is my attempt to capture vast endlessness in a fleeting visual and aural moment. What I can only hope to relay to anyone else is a view of my sky in the form of an animated sensory experience. A familiar sight and sound, put to paper. A portrait in blue.”
